Texas Holdem is the most famous and important poker game in the world. In Hold’em, each player receives 2 hole cards that belong only to him. Three community cards are dealt face up on the board (theflop)so all the players can use them. Another card is dealt face up (4th street), and then another card is dealt face up (the river). Every player can use the 5 cards dealt face up on the table to make the best 5 card hand, so each player has 7 cards to make the best five card hand.

The three variations of Hold’em are distinguished by their betting limits:

  1. Limit Texas Hold’em: the betting limit is a default in each round of betting.
  2. Texas Hold’em No Limit: a player can bet all their chips.
  3. Pot Limit Texas Hold’em: a player can bet only what is in the pot.

How to play Texas Hold’em

The Dealer

The D symbol indicates who the dealer in the game is and in the first round of betting is the last player to act.

The Blinds

The blinds are forced bets that 2 players will have to make before cards are dealt. The player to the left of the dealer is the “small blind” and the “big blind” is the player to the left of the “small blind”. Big Blind is usually double the small blind.

Flop

The flop is the 3 community cards dealt on the table, also known as The Board. The first player to act is the one immediately left of the button and players can check or bet.

The Turn

The turn is also known as the 4th street. It begins when all the betting in the flop is over and a new card is dealt face up in the board. Betting is the same as in the flop; check or bet.

The River

The River is also known as the 5th street. It begins when betting in the turn ends and a new card is dealt face up on the board. Betting is the same as in the flop and turn.

The Showdown

After the river card (last card) is dealt face up, a last round of betting begins. When the players are finishing betting, checking or raising, they must show or fold their cards so that a single player will be declared the winner of the pot.
