Gus Hansen Becomes Sponsor For The Danish Squash Team
Gus Hansen had some good news for the Danish squash elite, when Danish championships was held this weekend in Herning in Denmark.
Because of pressures economy in the small federation, it had been decided that the team had to abandon the European Championships in Finland next month.
It was however resolved after Gus Hansen had a meeting with the coach and chairman of the Danish Squash Federation, where he offered to pay for the expenses, so the national team could get to the championship.
- I’m an eccentric squash player with a big purse, “says Gus Hansen, who takes the team to Finland in late April.
- We are five players, a coach and Gus Hansen as the mascot, he smiles.
Hope for advancement
Squash team’s new sponsor is optimistic when it comes to national team’s chances.
- Right now Denmark is in the B group, but theres a really good chance that they can win it. So the goal for the championships is promotion to the A group, said Gus Hansen.
Sponsor Splendid applies only to EM … However, there is the possibility of extension.
- For starters, it temporarily, but if it goes well, it may well be that we continue. Many only associate squash with fitness centers. Few people know that we actually have two top 100 players in the world, says the Danish poker star.
Gus Hansen is himself an avid squash player and has been for some years.
- I started the game by being beat by Theo (Jorgensen, who is also a professional poker player). As the stubborn rad, I am, I could not have it sitting on me, he said.
The dane have been trained by one of Americas female player who was in top 20 in the world. And he actually attended this weekend’s Danish championships. A-group which is the next best number.
The goal was to win it, which didn’t went quite after the plan. Gus Hansen lost a single match, won the rest and had to settle for fifth place.
- My personal goal is to come up in amnong the best home in Denmark. That means top 16th, but it can be difficult. There are many young talented emerging, says the poker player who as a young man was a great tennis talent.
With his 37 years, his age isn’t the best card for Gus Hansen.
- No, but at heart I’m 24, he laughs.
