Dutch Parlament say yes to online gambling on sports, poker
A new administration is in charge in the Netherlands, and it’s taking a whole different approach to online gambling.
The government said Saturday it planned to grant licenses for Internet gambling for sports betting, poker, bingo and more. Those licenses, along with lottery licenses, could bring in more than $14 million annually starting in 2012.
“It is a big shift, but this is a new government with a more liberal approach,” Jaap Oosterveer, a spokesman for the Dutch ministry of public safety and justice, told Reuters.
The previous government defended an online gambling ban all the way to the European Union’s highest court.
An official in the new Dutch government, which took over last fall, noted that France, Italy, Austria, Britain and Sweden already regulate gambling so the Netherlands should do the same, according to Reuters.
The official, Fredrik Teeven, state secretary of security and justice, added that hundreds of thousands of Dutch were defying the online gambling ban anyway. The change in the law would allow more oversight, Teeven wrote in a letter to parlament, according to Reuters.
