Poker rookie ends 36-hour marathon £109k richer

AN amateur poker player is celebrating after winning £109,000 in prize money following a tense 36 hours at the card table.

Web designer Gaz Walker, 28, only began playing the game a few years ago and was taking part in his second tournament when he struck lucky.

He claimed the pot after 1,000 people turned up to play in the contest at a Nottingham casino hall.

Mr Walker, from Jarrow, South Tyneside, stumped up £500 to enter the contest and ended up duelling down to the last man until past 3am.

He said: “I decided to go all in and blow him out of the water and it worked. I was over the moon.

“The whole thing is still very surreal and only now is it starting to sink in.”

He has bought a car and a family holiday and is planning a trip to Las Vegas to play in the World Series.
